The Philippine government expressed its hope on Tuesday for an impartial impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, amid public unease following shifts in the Senate’s leadership. The statement came from Malacañang Palace, emphasizing the importance of fairness in the upcoming proceedings.
Claire Castro, serving as the Palace Press Officer, remarked that the impeachment case has now moved to the Senate, underscoring that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. intends to remain uninvolved in the process. “Hopefully, if this goes to the Senate, our senators will be fair judges, because this is for the people,” Castro stated during a press briefing.
She reiterated that the responsibility lies with the Senate, following the actions of the House of Representatives. Castro clarified, “So, the House of Representatives has spoken and it is their job, and it is not part of the mandate of the President,” highlighting the separation of powers in handling the case.
The developments have sparked public interest and concern over the integrity of the trial, as the Senate’s recent leadership changes could influence the proceedings. The Palace’s statement aims to reassure the public of the government’s commitment to a just and transparent process.
