Amid escalating tensions with Poland over a contentious historical issue, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has opted not to attend the Ukraine Recovery Conference taking place in Gdańsk, Poland. The international gathering is designed to solicit global support and investment for Ukraine’s reconstruction following the war. In Zelenskyy’s stead, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko will lead the Ukrainian delegation at the event.
The discord between Kyiv and Warsaw was ignited when Zelenskyy sanctioned the naming of a Ukrainian military unit in honor of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). While some Ukrainians view the UPA as a symbol of their fight for independence, in Poland, the group is associated with the deaths of thousands of Poles during World War II. This decision has drawn criticism from several Polish leaders, including President Karol Nawrocki, who has accused Ukraine of disregarding historical grievances.
Despite the friction, both nations have maintained close ties since Russia’s incursion into Ukraine. Zelenskyy has defended his decision, asserting that military units should be allowed to select names that connect to Ukrainian history. He cautioned that political disputes at this juncture could undermine the vital cooperation between Ukraine and Poland, especially amid ongoing security threats.
In light of the growing discord, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for a de-escalation of tensions. He emphasized that any disagreements should not harm the strategic alliance that both countries have cultivated. European officials have echoed this sentiment, warning that deteriorating relations between Ukraine and Poland could play into Russia’s hands. They have urged both nations to maintain their collaborative efforts as neighboring allies.
