During a visit to Brunei, Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening the bilateral relationship between their nations. This visit was part of the celebrations marking the Sultan’s 80th birthday, a significant occasion that further underscored their mutual commitment to collaboration.
The discussions between the two leaders emphasized the importance of upcoming milestones that symbolize the enduring partnership between Singapore and Brunei. They highlighted the 50th anniversary of defence ties set to be commemorated in 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement in 2027. These anniversaries were presented as opportunities to reflect on past achievements and set a course for future cooperation.
In addition to marking these milestones, the dialogue between Lee and the Sultan focused on broadening collaboration in critical areas such as energy, food security, and supply chain resilience. The leaders also underscored the importance of enhancing people-to-people exchanges, which are seen as vital for fostering mutual understanding and cultural ties.
Minister Lee’s visit included meetings with Brunei’s Crown Prince and senior ministers to discuss initiatives aimed at nurturing ties between future leaders and the youth of both countries. This focus on younger generations is part of a broader strategy to ensure the longevity and vitality of the bilateral relationship. During his stay, Lee also attended official birthday celebrations, engaged with Singapore Armed Forces personnel stationed in Brunei for training purposes, and visited a Singapore-operated aquaculture farm, which stands as an example of the cooperative projects underway between the two nations.
