Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, is calling for a surge of young individuals with varied backgrounds and innovative ideas to join the People’s Action Party (PAP). Emphasizing the importance of diversity, Wong highlighted at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Young PAP that having multiple perspectives is crucial for the party’s ongoing renewal and its ability to tackle future challenges facing Singapore. He extended an invitation to citizens passionate about the country’s future, encouraging them to share their ideas and engage, even if they have disagreements with the PAP on certain matters.

Wong addressed the perception among some young Singaporeans that the PAP, as an established entity, might not require new members. Contrarily, he argued that Singapore remains a global “underdog” and needs each new generation to infuse leadership and innovation. By embracing new voices, the party can continue to evolve and remain effective in addressing the nation’s needs.

In his speech, Wong also cautioned against divisive and confrontational political tactics. He asserted that the PAP stands firmly against fueling public anger or fostering political polarization. Instead, the party is committed to problem-solving through collaboration, practical action, and building consensus, ensuring that governance remains constructive and inclusive.

The event also marked significant initiatives aimed at nurturing future leaders within the party. The Young PAP Academy was launched to provide leadership training and mentorship to youth activists, equipping them with skills necessary for impactful participation. Additionally, the YP 40 Under 40 Fellowship was introduced, offering grants of S$5,000 to support community projects spearheaded by young party members, thus encouraging active involvement and innovation at the grassroots level.
