Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to make history with an official visit to Timor-Leste from July 2 to 3, marking the first time a leader from Singapore has visited the Southeast Asian nation. During this significant diplomatic mission, PM Wong will engage in discussions with Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. A notable highlight of the visit will be PM Wong receiving the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar), the country’s highest honor, recognizing Singapore’s pivotal role in supporting Timor-Leste’s development and integration into ASEAN.

Central to the visit will be dialogues aimed at fortifying bilateral ties through the establishment of a new framework for regular consultations between the two countries. This will be further solidified with the signing of a memorandum of understanding that seeks to enhance collaboration in key areas such as governance, capacity building, and regional engagement. Singapore’s commitment to Timor-Leste’s progress has been longstanding, with contributions including training programs, technical assistance, and peacekeeping efforts since the nation’s early post-independence years. This partnership has been invigorated with Timor-Leste joining ASEAN as its newest member.

In addition to high-level meetings, PM Wong will attend a state banquet and connect with Singaporean citizens residing in Timor-Leste. Accompanying him on this trip will be senior ministers and government officials. Back in Singapore, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will assume the role of acting prime minister during Wong’s absence, ensuring continuity in leadership.

The visit is poised to not only strengthen diplomatic relations but also to bolster Timor-Leste’s integration into regional institutions. These discussions and collaborations underscore a continued commitment to mutual growth and development, reflecting Singapore’s strategic role in supporting its Southeast Asian neighbors.
