A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines on Monday, resulting in at least 35 fatalities and injuring more than 200 individuals. The seismic event, which originated near Mindanao at a depth of approximately 33 kilometers, also generated a tsunami that impacted several coastal regions. The city of General Santos bore the brunt of the destruction, with numerous structures either collapsing or sustaining severe damage. Rescue operations are ongoing as teams strive to locate individuals trapped under the wreckage.
In one of the most tragic incidents, a landslide triggered by the earthquake in Sarangani province claimed the lives of 13 residents. Additional deaths were reported in surrounding provinces, primarily due to building collapses and falling debris. Tsunami waves, reaching heights of up to 1.4 meters, caused further damage along parts of the southern coastline, affecting homes and coastal infrastructure. Smaller waves were also observed in nearby regions, including Indonesia, Palau, and Japan. The tsunami warning was eventually lifted after officials determined there was no longer an immediate threat.
The earthquake led to the temporary closure of General Santos International Airport, disrupting several domestic flights. In response, schools in affected areas were closed as emergency teams began assessing the damage and coordinating relief efforts. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called for a swift government response, instructing disaster management agencies to provide assistance to the impacted communities.
Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant due to the potential for aftershocks. They are advised not to return to damaged buildings until thorough safety inspections have been conducted. The Philippines is particularly vulnerable to seismic activity, being situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone renowned for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
